Centre for Energy Studies

To equip a high quality skilled work force relevant to current and emerging employment market needs, Department of Mechanical Engineering has established a centre for energy studies in association with Academic.
Objectives:
• To establish a facility on solar thermal power equipments.
• To establish performance assessment test facility for solar thermal equipments.
• To develop simulation facility for validating the experimental setup.
• Facilitate R&D for cost reduction of solar thermal power equipment.
Aim and Scope:
Main purpose of establish this center is to focus our research on solar thermal equipment and provide exposure and motivation to the students and research community to work on the area of solar thermal. Creating a new generation of ‘Energy Engineers’ to develop, install, operate and maintain sustainable energy solutions for meeting the energy demand of the society. To provide Interdisciplinary technical knowledge and skills to face the challenging task of requirement due to the huge populations. Experimental setup for evaluating the thermal performance has been developed for the following solar thermal devices.
1. Solar Green House Dryer
     1) Igloo
     2) Modified Quonset
     3) Quonset
     4) Trophical
     5) Pyramid
     6) Parabola
2. Solar Water Heater
3. Single Pass Solar Air Heater
4. Double Pass Solar Air Heater
5. Helical Coil Heat Exchanger
6. Spiral Coil Heat Exchanger
7. Solar Still Type – 1 (2 Nos.)
8. Solar Still Type – 2
9. Compound Parabolic Collector – Symmetric
10. Compound Parabolic Collector – Asymmetric
11. Portable Tube Bender
Facilities & Utilization:
The Department of Mechanical Engineering established the solar energy laboratory to encourage the students and faculty members to do the various projects and research work.
The laboratory promotes research activities, publications, patent and IPR and to create opportunities for developing entrepreneurship skills
Create opportunities to provide platform for the students to interact with industry experts.
The following are the list of equipment of the laboratory:
• Lux Meter
• Air Blower
• Thermocouple
• Solar Pyranometer
• Anemometer
• USB Temperature Data Logger
• Digital Thermo Anemometer
• K-Type Thermocouple
• Digital Humidity Meter

Final year students use this lab to their final semester projects in the area of solar thermal energy. Best projects are selected and displayed in project lab to appreciate their work.
Mini projects are carried out in this lab by second and third year students in solar energy. Best three projects are selected and awarded suitably.
Solar energy laboratory is fully equipped with state-of-art measurements and instrumentations to do research solar energy systems; namely, the Pyranometer, Anemometer, Digital Thermo Anemometer, Multimeter and Data Logging Systems.
